What is an Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC)
An Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC) is a CASA issued qualification required by anyone who needs to communicate on an aviation air-band radio frequency and is not already licenced or qualified to do so.
Who Might Need an AROC?
Airport Manager, Aerodrome Reporting Officer & Safety Officer
Personnel maybe required to communicate with Air Traffic Control or Aircraft when operating on an Aerodrome.
Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (L.A.M.E)
Maybe required to make broadcasts in order to test aircraft radio as part of their job description.
Aero-Medical and Rescue Helicopter Crews
Required for aircrew, rescue/hoist crew, doctors and paramedics during rescue operations.
Landing Officers
Personnel working on offshore platforms whose duties include Helicopter Landing Officer.
Drone/RPAS/UAV Pilots
Drone/RPAS/UAV pilots operating in the vicinity of aerodromes, restricted areas or helicopter landing zones.
Loadmasters
Loading or unloading freight for air transport may be required to transmit on an aeronautical radio.
Baggage Handlers
Baggage Handlers and other company personnel working inside an airport environment maybe required to transmit on an aeronautical radio.
Police / Fire Ambulance / SES Surf Lifesaving
Maybe required to use aeronautical radios to coordinate emergency situations
AvGas & JetA1 Refuelers
AVGas & JetA1 Refuelers operating at aerodromes where radio communication with Air Traffic Control is required.
Rescue Swimmers
To enable communication with the pilot and crew.
To Obtain an AROC you must:
- Be at least 17 years old
- Hold an Aviation Reference Number– apply free online on the Civil Aviation Safety Authority website here
- have completed training through a registered training organisation or a person/organisation who holds a CASR Part 64.012 approval to conduct AROC training and assessments.
- Have been assessed as meeting the required competency.
- Hold a current English Language Proficiency assessment (GELP or AELP)
Our Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate Course has been designed by qualified Commercial Pilot Flight Instructors to deliver the required aviation radiotelephone knowledge and skills for the awarding of the Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC). We are also able to offer the General English Language Proficiency (GELP) and Aviation English Language Proficiency (AELP) to those who require and qualify.
